Activity Therapy Services
An outlet for happiness, self-expression, and self-determination is basic to leading a healthy life.
The Laguna Honda activity therapy department provides residents with specially-tailored activities designed to provide satisfying opportunities for leisure and learning.
The Activity Therapy and Wellness Department is a dynamic group of individuals. The department strives to enable residents with physical, cognitive, emotional and/or social limitations to acquire, maintain, and/or increase skills, knowledge and behaviors to maximize their quality of life and reach optimal health through meaningful participation in recreation and leisure.
The activities and programs they create, which take advantage of the rich cultural amenities of San Francisco and the extraordinary range of local talent, include:
- Animal-assisted therapy
- Arts and crafts
- Spiritual care
- Participation and discussion of current events
- Expressive arts
- Special presentations like theatre and concerts
Each activity is designed to recognize residents’ individual and cultural uniqueness and promote their independence and integration.
Activity therapists work closely with nurses, doctors, dieticians, social workers, and other members of the team of professionals who participate with each resident and his or her family to design an individualized care plan. Activity Therapists play a vital role in the everyday lives of residents through engaging them in activities. There is a full calendar of on-site programs related to arts and crafts, aquatics, general exercise, games and animal-assisted therapies that is available to residents on a monthly basis. Please contact the Activity Therapist assigned to your neighborhood for all event calendars.
Activity therapists get to know each resident and to understand their likes and dislikes. Based on a comprehensive assessment, they design a program of activities that engage each individual intellectually, physically, and socially to enhance their health and life.
In alignment with the mission, vision, and values of the hospital our staff is dedicated to the wellbeing of our residents. Through various facilitation techniques we design opportunities for residents that provide meaning and value. Our talented staff support residents' strengths and celebrate differences. The activities aim to engage, increase self-determination and promote independence. We negotiate and diminish barriers to allow for participation in activities important to each individual.

Laguna Honda Hospital Outing Program
Laguna Honda Hospital's (LHH) Activity Therapy Department supports an extensive outings program that provides comprehensive off-campus community oriented activities for clinically diverse residents. The program collaborates with LHH's nursing department to ensure that the community outings are safe for each individual resident who goes out on the outing. Our outings program aims to enhance the quality of life for the residents, reduce boredom and isolation resulting from longer term hospitalization, promote a sense of normalcy through contacts with the surrounding community, and reintegrate residents back into the community.
